The Madonna
softball team settled for a doubleheader split with visiting Indiana Tech
Saturday at Madonna University Field.
The Crusaders (19-10, 6-2 WHAC) won game one, 1-0, after senior
Shannon Noder
(Lincoln Park, Mich./Lincoln Park HS) scattered five hits and struck
out seven batters en route to her second shutout of the season.
Indiana Tech (15-13-1, 4-3-1 WHAC) staved off a late comeback bid by MU to hold
on for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
In the opening game of the day, Madonna battled the cold temperatures and solid
pitching performance by Indiana Tech freshman Jessie Williams.
Williams held the Crusaders to just two hits, but Madonna scored what proved to
be the winning run in the third inning after
Heather Richardson
(Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS) doubled home
Hannah Godfrey
(Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS).
The one run was plenty for Noder (10-5), who stranded six Warriors on base and
did not yield a walk in the win.
Indiana Tech jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the Crusaders in game two after Liz
Ballinger (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) surrendered a two-run homer
to April Alexander in the second inning.
The Crusaders picked up a run in fourth inning to cut the lead to two runs (4-2)
as
Tedi Johnston
(New Boston, Mich./Huron HS) scored on a throwing error by the Warriors.
Madonna would inch closer in the sixth inning after Godfrey hit a ground
ball single up the middle, which plated
Kathleen Smiley
(Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western HS) to cut the lead to just a single
run (4-3).
In the seventh inning, Madonna loaded the bases before the Indiana Tech
hurler Nikki Winger slammed the door to give the Warriors a win in the back end
of the doubleheader.
Freshman
Caitlyn Sidor
(Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) led the offensive attack for the Crusaders in
game two with a 3-for-4 performance and one RBI.
The Crusaders return to the diamond Thursday, April 19 in a makeup contest at
Aquinas at 3:00 p.m.
