The Madonna softball team picked up their first loss of the
conference season Sunday after Siena Heights won the back end of a
doubleheader. Madonna (16-9, 3-1 WHAC) won game one 7-6 after
scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Siena
Heights (10-13, 1-3 WHAC) earned their first win in WHAC play after
earning a 3-0 win in game two.
Madonna jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the host Saints in game one.
However, Siena Heights trimmed the lead to a single run (4-3) after
plating two runners in the fourth inning.
Freshman
Rachael Kethe
(Richmond, Mich./Richmond HS) would score for MU in the
top of the sixth inning to give the Crusaders a 5-3 advantage before
Siena Heights exploded for three runs in the bottom half of the
inning and claimed a 6-5 lead.
Freshman
Samantha Bell
(Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) and sophomore
Ashley Bonsall
(Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) scored the tying and go
ahead runs in the seventh inning to give MU the 7-6 win.
Senior southpaw
Shannon Noder
(Lincoln Park, Mich./Lincoln Park HS) earned the win
after giving up 10 hits, six runs, five of which were earned, and
striking out two.
In game two, the Crusaders would out hit Siena Heights 8-6 but two
errors and nine stranded base runners proved to be enough for the
Saints to earn a split in the doubleheader with a 3-0 win.
The Saints pushed across one run in the fifth inning and added two
more in the sixth.
Liz Ballinger
(St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) took the loss for MU
after scattering six hits and allowing three runs.
Freshman Dani Bailey picked up the win for SHU. Bailey also
notched six strikeouts in the contest.
Madonna will return to the diamond on Thursday, April 5 in a
conference doubleheader at Aquinas. First pitch is scheduled
for 3:00 p.m. in Grand Rapids.
