The Crusaders received solid pitching and timely hitting in a split doubleheader
sweep Wednesday at the Tucson Invitational Games.
Madonna (5-4) won the first game against Bethany Lutheran (MN) 7-1 behind a
strong effort from starter
Liz Ballinger
(St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS).
Ballinger (3-2) gave up just four hits and an unearned run, while striking out
six batters in the win.
Sophomore outfielder
Mary Kate Setta
(Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) hit her first home run of the season in
the fourth inning for Madonna.
In game two, senior hurler
Shannon Noder
(Lincoln Park, Mich./Lincoln Park HS) pitched a one-hit shutout as
Madonna rolled to an 8-0 win over Saint Mary (KS) in six innings.
The Spires picked up their only hit in the first inning off Noder (2-2), who
also fanned three batters.
Hannah Godfrey
(Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) led the Crusaders offensive attack in
game two with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, which included a double and a
stolen base.
Sophomore
Danielle Richardson
(Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West HS) and freshman
Brittney Scero
(Canton, Mich./Canton HS) each extended their hitting streaks to nine games
after picking up hits in both games today.
The Crusaders will play Thursday, March 8 against Judson (IL) at 5:00 p.m.
ET and then against William Penn (IL) at 7:30 p.m. ET before returning to
Michigan on Friday.
