Just two days into the trip, the Madonna softball team turned
up the intensity on offense, scoring 17 runs in two games on Sunday.
In the first game, Madonna lost a slugfest against Azusa Pacific (CA), 13-7.
Junior lefthander
Liz Ballinger
(St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) was saddled with the loss after
pitching 3.1 innings of relief.
Junior outfielder
Heather Richardson
(Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS) went 2-for-2 at the plate for Madonna,
including a three-run homer and three walks.
Freshman
Brittney Scero
(Canton, Mich./Canton HS) also had two hits and two RBI for MU.
Overall, the two teams combined for 31 hits, with the Cougars busting out for 20
hits in the win.
In game two, Ballinger (2-1) was also the pitcher of record, this time earning a
win after notching a complete game, while scattering eight hits and fanning two
as the Crusader defeated Hope International, 10-6.
The Crusaders were paced offensively by Scero and sophomore shortstop
Tedi Johnston
(New Boston, Mich./Huron HS)
each racked up four hits. Johnston went 4-for-4 in the game with five RBI,
a home run and a double. Scero pounded out four singles against Hope
International.
Sophomore
Alison Grant
(Carleton, Mich./Airport HS) belted a solo home run to lead off the third
inning and
Richardson also drove in three runs for Madonna in the win.
The Crusaders will return to action on Sunday, March 4 against Viterbo at 10:30 a.m. ET and then
against Jamestown at 12:30 p.m. ET in
Tucson.
