Madonna junior Jeff Sonnenberg picked up
his third award of the week on Wednesday as the
NAIA national office announced that he was
selected the National Pitcher of the Week for
the week ending April 20. Sonnenberg had been
named the WHAC and Region VIII Pitcher of the
Week on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference office
announced on Monday that Madonna teammates
Jeff Sonnenberg and Kevin Zerbo had
swept the WHAC’s Pitcher and Player of the Week
awards respectively. This is the first selection
for Sonnenberg and the second for Zerbo this
season. Sonnenberg was also named NAIA
Region VIII Pitcher of the Week in a statement

Softball Drops Two For First Losses Of Season
The
Crusader softball team dropped both of its games
on Monday at the Tucson Invitational. MU fell
6-1 to #14 William Penn in the opener and
dropped the night cap 9-7 to the University of
Great Falls. Brittney Scero went 2-for-4 with a
double and a run scored and Christian Finch was
2-for-3 in the opener. Kathleen Smiley
(pictured) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a
homer while Cat Sidor was 3-for-4 in the second
game of the day for MU. The Crusaders continue
play on Tuesday with games against Peru State
and Trinity International.

Offense Busts Out In A Big Way In Softball Wins
The
Madonna softball team hung 26 runs on the board
in its two games Sunday at the Tucson
Invitational, downing
Waynesburg 13-2 behind Michelle
Henning's first collegiate win and a two hits
each from Kelly Lesko and Cat Sidor. Liz
Ballinger improved to 3-0 on the season with her
complete game win in MU's 13-3 downing of Minot
State. Danielle Richardson (pictured) collected
three RBIs and Sidor posted three more hits in
the victory. The Crusaders continue play with
games on Monday against the University of Great
Falls and #14 William Penn.

Crusaders Split Day One in Arizona
The MU baseball team moved to 3-1 on the season
after splitting a double-header versus Malone
College in Chandler, Arizona Saturday afternoon.
Sean Maher picked up the mound win in the
nightcap while Rikco Rhoades went two-for-three
with a RBI.

Softball Moves to 4-0 With
Day Two Wins
The
Crusader softball team improved to 4-0 on the
young season with a pair of wins on Saturday. In
game one, Jessica Irwin went the distance,
striking out six while getting offensive help
from a 3-for-4 game from Mary Kate Setta to go
along with a 2-for-4 game from both Brittany
Scero and Danielle Richardson as MU took care of
Trinity International 6-2. Liz Ballinger went
the distance for MU in game two as Cat Sidor
(pictured) went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs
batted in as Madonna beat the University of
Great Falls 7-2. MU returns to action at 2pm MT
on Sunday.

Crusader Softball Opens 2008 With Sweep
The
Madonna softball team opened its stay at the
Tucson Invitational with a pair of wins on
Friday. MU downed John Carroll 7-5 in eight
innings and run-ruled Briar Cliff 8-0 in the
night cap in five innings. Freshman Jessica
Irwin struck out 11 in the opener getting
offensive help from Tedi Johnston's RBI double.
Senior Liz Ballinger (pictured) threw a complete
game in the nightcap, using a pair of RBIs from
both Christina Finch and Mary Kate Setta to
cruise to the win. Madonna takes on Trinity
International and Great Falls tomorrow starting
at 2pm MT.

Women Roll In Tourney Win 70-51 Over Cards
The Madonna women's basketball
team trailed just once and used 21 points from
freshman Tabatha Wydryck and 13 each from
Christie Carrico and Cali Crawford to cruise to
a 70-51 WHAC Tournament opening win over
Concordia on Thursday night inside the
Activities Center. The win sends MU into the
WHAC semi-finals on Saturday at Davenport.

points in the second half to defeat #6-seed
Siena Heights in the first round of the 2008
WHAC Championship Tournament Wednesday night.

MU into the semi-finals Saturday afternoon .

Named First Team All-Conference, One of Five MU
Players Honored by League
In a
vote of the eight Conference coaches, Madonna
senior guard/forward Caryn Inman was selected as to the All-WHAC first team in a
statement released today. Inman is one
of five Crusaders honored, joining second team
selection Christie Carrico, third team and
newcomer team selection Tabatha Wydryck and
Champions of Character selection Stephanie Day.
Inman and fellow seniors Stephanie Day and Becca Rufli were also named

Come Back to Down Cards At Home
A career best 30 points and 14 rebounds from
Jon Battle (Cleveland, Ohio) helped
the Madonna (17-12; 9-4 WHAC) men’s basketball
team score a 76-70 come-from-behind win over
visiting Concordia (10-18; 6-6 WHAC) on Saturday
inside the Activities Center. The win -
Madonna’s 17th overall and ninth in
WHAC play – establishes a new school record for
conference wins for the Crusaders.

The Madonna softball team took two
huge steps toward Decatur, Alabama Tuesday, knocking off Bethel
College 12-4 and top-seeded Aquinas 3-2 in day one play at the NAIA

the first game of the day, and a two run double by Christina Finch

Madonna University senior third
baseman Ben Ramsey was named the 2006 WHAC baseball Player of the
Year in a statement released by the league today. The
Englewood, Ohio native leads MU in nine offensive categories and
helped the Crusaders capture their second straight WHAC title.
Six other Crusaders were named to the league first team including
two-time selection Todd Kalmbach, Jason Barbeau and Derek
Dufrane. Head Coach Greg Haeger was also named the 2006 Coach

Player of the Week
Madonna senior first baseman Todd Kalmbach is the WHAC baseball Player of
the Week for April 17, 2006. The Wyandotte, Michigan native led a potent
Madonna offense that scored 86 runs in six games by hitting .529 and driving
in 16 runs. Kalmbach went 9-for-17 with six runs scored and six extra base
hits, including a pair of home runs while slugging an impressive 1.176 as
Madonna moved to 8-0 in conference and 20-15-1 overall.

Top Pitcher for Third Straight Week
Erin Brockert is the WHAC softball Pitcher
of the Week for April 10, 2006. The senior from Dayton, Ohio went 2-0 in
three appearances for the Crusaders. Brockert struck out nine in a complete
game three-hit win at Siena Heights, then fanned four in a complete game
victory against Aquinas. She also appeared in three-and-two-thirds innings
of relief against the Saints, striking out three and allowing no earned
runs. For the week, Brockert fanned 16 while walking none and allowing just
one earned run in 17-and-two-thirds innings of work.

Madonna University senior third
baseman Ben Ramsey is the WHAC baseball Player of the Week for April 10,
2006. The Englewood, Ohio native put together an impressive week at the

Brockert, Grant Sweep Weekly Conference Honors
A pair of Crusaders, Erin Brockert
and Alison Grant swept the weekly WHAC softball awards being named
conference pitcher and player of the week respectively today.
Brockert went 3-1 with a save, mixed in a perfect game and a 20
straight scoreless innings for her second straight honor. Grant
posted a .536 average and drove in 14 runs to lead the offensive
attack and take home her first career player of the week award.

season, broke through for a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single by

After Losses Monday
The offensive struggles of #20 Madonna continued Monday with a pair of
losses at Point Loma Nazarene's Spring Break Classic. The Crusaders mustered
seven hits but scored just three times in a 9-3 morning loss to Bethany
University. Madonna left the bases loaded twice, leading to the first loss
of the season for starter Mike Hand. In game two, Madonna squared off with
#6 Point Loma Nazarene and walked away with a 9-2 defeat. Freshman Keegan
Beaton was a bright spot for MU, making his first collegiate start and
striking out six in five innings of work, but taking the loss.
Ben Ramsey was 2-for-5 in game one while catcher Zack Flavin picked up his

Their
Stroke at Concordia
The Madonna men's basketball team shot just 20-for-67 from the field, a
29-percent clip in a 67-51 loss at Concordia Monday night. The Cardinals
turned 13 MU turnovers into 19 points down the stretch to pull away. The
Crusaders were led by Charlie Henry's 12-points in the loss, running their
season record to 9-16, 3-7 in league play. Concordia improved to 15-11
overall, 6-4 in the WHAC.

The road to a WHAC title repeat just got a bit bumpier for the Madonna
women's basketball team after falling 54-41 at home Saturday to Indiana
Tech. The Crusaders went ice-cold from the floor in the second half, hitting
just five field goals. Martina Franklin and Sarah Thomson each scored nine
points with Thomson adding 12 rebounds in the loss. Tech was paced by
Cheriah Coley's 13 points and 10 boards. With the loss, Madonna falls to
11-4 overall, 6-4 in conference play while Indiana Tech improves to 16-9,
8-2 in the league.

baseball team is the pick to repeat as conference champions by a poll of
league coaches announced Wednesday. Senior pitcher Derek Dufrane was tabbed
the preseason Pitcher of the Year, one of five preseason selections for the
team. Madonna garnered four of five first place votes and is ranked #17 in
the NAIA Top-25 poll.

Saturday, defeating host Cornerstone 78-72. In a rematch of last seasons

Collegiate Baseball’s preseason All-America and Players to Watch teams. The
honorees included second team selection
Derek Dufrane
who was a NAIA second team All-America selection last season after posting a
10-2 record with a 1.40 ERA and just 10 walks on the season. Hard-throwing
lefty newcomer Eric
Wendling
and senior first-baseman
Todd Kalmbach
were on the watch list. Kalmbach led the team in hitting in 2005.
The trio are a big reason the magazine picked MU #17 in their preseason
top-25 poll.

Nationals Bid with Win
The Madonna volleyball team is
headed back to San Diego after their Region VIII championship game win over
Cornerstone Saturday night. Natalja Tinina, who was named Region
Player of the Year after the match paced the Crusader offense with 26 kills.
All-Region selection Laura Lesko posted 15 kills and Region Setter of the
Year, Ashley Frost contributed 42 assists. Madonna fired on all cylinders in
the match including a 16-0 run to start game two, which they led at one
point 21-1. The Crusaders will await the seeding of the 2005 National
Championships held Nov. 30-Dec. 3 at Point Loma Nazarene University.

straight defeat, 74-68 to Bethel (IN) Saturday afternoon. Four Crusaders

The Madonna men's soccer program
has had it's share of great players over the years, but a case can now be
made that Tom Stark is the best of them all. The senior defender was
named NAIA Region VIII Player-of-the-Year Monday after leading the Crusaders
to the regional finals and a 16-3-1 record. Stark was joined on the
All-Region first team by teammates Derrick Mudri, Rod Asllani and Ryan
Montague.

close at the hands of Bethel College. The Crusaders and Pilots battled

pulled out the 5-4 advantage in sudden-death shootout. Rod Asllani and Ryan

Crusaders Set Several
Personal Records at NAIA Regional Meet
It was a
successful day for the Madonna men's and women's cross country teams as
several Crusaders set new personal records in the final event of the Year.
On the men's side, Keith Hearns paced the squad finishing 35th overall with
a time of 27:13, less than two minutes off first-place pace. Joe Horka
finished 54th at 27:42 and Jeremy Burke 110th at 32:57. For the women,
Kaileen Krizanich finished in 63rd place at 21:16 and Kristina Birch was
105th at 23:48.

Senior Night Turns
Historic With 3-0 Victory
The Madonna volleyball team said
goodbye to four remarkable seniors and hello to the record-books, becoming
the first Madonna team of any kind to have a perfect regular season,
finishing 40-0 after thir three game sweep of Aquinas Friday night.
With the win, Madonna also ties for 10th on the NAIA All-time consecutive
match wins list.
Seniors Natalja Tinina and Laura Lesko had 13 and 10 kills respectively
while senior libero Stefanie DeNardin added 10 digs and senior Ashley Frost
posted 39 assists in their regular season home finale.

Regional Final Shootout
The No. 8 ranked Madonna
women's soccer team battled with Indiana Wesleyan for 110 minutes Friday
afternoon but had to go to a penalty kick shoot-out to decide a winner in

PK's. Kelly Japowcz scored the game tying goal in the second half and four

Offensive Player of the Year
A day after advancing to the WHAC
Tournament Championship game, Madonna got great news individually as three
players were named to the 2005 WHAC All-Conference first team, including
Offensive Player of the year Kelly Japowicz (top). Joining Japowicz
were Lacey Catarino and Julie Turner and head coach Mark Zathey who was
selected conference Coach of the Year for the third time. In all, 12
Crusaders earned All-Conference accolades with two more earning Academic

The Madonna men's soccer team
closed the WHAC regular season with a convincing 7-0 victory under the
lights at Indiana Tech Tuesday night. Derrick Mudri scored a hat-trick while
Endri Xhacka added a pair of goals in the victory.

Crusaders Now 35-0 After Big Guns Tournament Title
The No. 4 ranked Madonna
volleyball team upped their record to 35-0 with two more victories Saturday.
The Crusaders defeated St. Francis (IL) and Taylor (IN) for the Big Guns
Tournament championship in Joliet, Illinois. The win marked the fifth
tournament crown of the season and increased their school record match win
streak to 36.

pair of 3-0 victories at the Big Guns tournament in Joliet, Illinois.

team bid farewell to seniors Liz DiPonio and Lacey Catarino in the final
regular season home game Wednesday, a 5-0 WHAC win over Siena Heights.
Five different Crusaders got into the scoring column including Kelly

Crusaders Clinch Share of
Title with 1-0 Win
The Madonna men's soccer team
clinched at least a share of the 2005 WHAC championship with a 1-0 victory
over Davenport Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Bill Sanders scored the
game winner with just under two minutes to play in regulation when his shot
deflected off a Panther defender and past Davenport keeper Carl Whitehouse.

Win Streak Runs to 32
with Sweep of Siena Heights
The No. 4 Madonna volleyball team
took just over an hour to defeat WHAC foe Siena heights University Tuesday
night for their 32nd straight victory dating back to the 2004 season.
Natalja Tinina paced the offensive attack with 24 kills while Laura Lesko
added nine and Ashley Frost posted 35 assists. With the win, MU
improves to 31-0 and 8-0 in conference play.

Four Crusaders Earn WHAC
Weekly Accolades
Kelly Japowicz's (pictured) two
goals Saturday helped propel the women's soccer team to victory over
Cornerstone and for her efforts she was named the women's soccer
Player-of-the-Week today by the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
The Madonna volleyball team went 3-0, vaulting their season record to 30-0
and saw Natalja Tinina, Ashley Frost and Stefanie DeNardin named player,
setter and libero-of-the-week respectively.

None of the four Madonna women's
golfers were able to break 100 in day one of the Franklin College Invite
Sunday. Madonna was paced by Allison Grants team-low round of 103.

Japowicz Leads Crusaders
to First Place Tie
The No. 10 ranked Madonna women's
soccer team handed visiting Cornerstone their first loss of the season
Saturday 2-1, forcing a tie atop the WHAC standings. Junior forward
Kelly Japowicz posted both goals for the Crusaders, the game winner coming
just over two-minutes into the second half. With the win, Madonna
improves to 12-1-3, 7-1 in conference play.

with Sweep at Concordia
The No. 4 Madonna volleyball team
ran their season record to 30-0 and 7-0 in WHAC play with a three game sweep
at Concordia Friday night. The Crusaders had to play much of the match
without Player-of-the-Year candidate Natalja Tinina who left early in game
two with a back problem. Fellow Latvian Lubovj Tihomirova (top) picked
up the slack with a career-high 8 kills in the win. Ashley Frost
continued her torrid pace with 39 assists.

came to a close Monday at the Polo Fields Country Club in Ann Arbor as
junior Jon McMahon fired a 76 in his final round to earn All-Conference

Saturday. Jackie Pingston eclipsed her previous best by half a minute

and Jeremy Burke all posted personal bests with 27:42, 27:54 and 33:46
