GOSHEN,
IN - -
In a tale of two completely different halves of soccer, the Madonna
men’s team saw a 1-0 halftime lead slip away in a 2-1 NAIA Regional
semi-final loss at Goshen College (IN) Wednesday night.
The Crusaders got on the
board first via the head of freshman Humberto
Toscan who took a corner kick serve by Doron
Drai just 4:54 into the game and deposited the ball to the bottom
left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders missed out on a
huge scoring chance, that would come back to haunt
them, at the 25:52 mark when senior forward Pat Griffin
drew a foul in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Doron Drai attempted the
shot for MU, but saw his kick sail over the net and onto the Goshen baseball
field.
The rest of the first half
was dominated by defense. Madonna held the Maple Leafs to just two total shots
thanks in large part to the stellar play of all-conference defender
Darrel Quinn.
The second half was a
completely different story, however, as Goshen came out with energy and
controlled the pace of play.
The Maple Leafs pressured the
net, finally capitalizing at the 58:53 mark when Joel Miller headed the ball
into the back left corner past Kris Lyons to knot the game 1-1.
The pressure didn’t end there
for Goshen, fueled by a crowd of over 600, the Maple Leafs took the lead on a
Raad Qumsieh unassisted blast to the top left shelf for a 2-1 lead.
Up by a goal, Goshen
continued to pepper the MU net, with
Kristofer Lyons making
numerous sterling saves to keep things close. MU could not overcome a stingy
defense by Goshen as time ticked by.
In the end, Madonna could not
penetrate the defensive wall for Goshen as time expired and
students streamed the field to celebrate Goshen’s first ever trip the
NAIA regional championship game.
The loss ends Madonna’s 2006
campaign with an 11-6-2 record.
