Crusaders Blanked in WHAC Home Opener

Pat Griffin had one shot on goal on a free kick that Davenport's Tyron Avnit made a brilliant save to keep the Crusaders scoreless.

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University men's soccer team dropped its home opener to Davenport in a 2-0 decision on Wednesday afternoon at Greenmead Field in Livonia.

Davenport picked up a goal at the 64:14 mark in the second half when Anes Suhonjic blocked a
Kristofer Lyons (Walled Lake, MI/Walled Lake Central HS) clearance that found its way into the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers would tack on an insurance goal at the 81:44 mark in the second half when Lebogang Thelele scored following a few moves to beat the Madonna defenders giving Davenport a 2-0 lead.

Madonna had several solid chances to take the lead late in the first half, but all were turned away by Davenport's goal keeper Tyron Avnit, who made a game high six saves on the day. 
Pat Griffin (Redford, MI/Catholic Central HS) had a bending free kick stopped by Avnit in the 69th minute, which would have tied the game a 1-1.

Lyons recorded four saves in net for Madonna on the day and the Crusaders were led offensively by
Ryan Montague's (St. Mary, Jamaica/Oracabessa HS) four total shots.

The Crusaders finished the match with 11 total shots, including six on goal and two corner kicks, while Davenport attempted 19 shots, including six on target and six corner kicks.  Madonna committed 13 fouls, while the Panthers were charged with 23, including three yellow cards and one red card.

Madonna's next action on the pitch is scheduled for Saturday in a conference game at Cornerstone in Grand Rapids, Michigan at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
