BOX SCORE
GRAND RAPIDS,
Mich.
– The Madonna men’s
soccer
team was forced to play a man down for the final 77 minutes of the match, but
used a goal with 21 second left in regulation from Makesi Lewis and Doron Drai
bent in a corner kick 5:40 into overtime to give the Crusaders a 2-1
come-from-behind overtime win over WHAC leader Davenport on Saturday in Grand
Rapids.
DU got on the board in the 10th
minute of the match as Efrain Hernandex ran down a long ball and got his shot
past a diving Kris Lyons to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
That is when the game got
interesting. MU's Darrel Quinn was issued a yellow card in the 19th minute and
was then issued a second a little less than a minute later and the Crusaders
were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the match. The cards to
Quinn seemed to start a stream of cards, as in addition to the ones issued to
Quinn, six more were issued in the match.
The Crusaders peppered the DU
keeper with shots, forcing Tyron Avnit to make six saves in the opening 45
minutes. Davenport out shot Madonna 8-7 in the first half.
The Panthers went on the offensive
in the second half, taking 17 total shots and forcing Lyons to make save
after save including a pair of spectacular diving stops on hard shots inside the
18-yard box. Lyons got help from defended Keith Seid in the 57th minute as the
junior transfer cleared a loose ball off of the line to keep it a one goal
match.
With 89:39 gone in the match, Lewis
took a pass from T.J. Djkoic and Mark Pikula and got his shot off to the right
side of the goal past a diving Avnit to tie the match and send the MU bench into
a frenzy.
Davenport had the first chance of
the extra period as Tony Deakin's header was snared by Lyons to keep the game
even. After MU worked to earn a corner, Drai set the ball in the left corner of
the field and sent a kick in that bent around the near post to give Madonna the
2-1 win.
Lyons made nine
saves on the day for the Crusaders, compared to six for his counterpart Avnit.
The Crusaders are
back in action on Tuesday as the Royal and Gold travels to Cornerstone for a 4pm
match.
