BOX SCORE
LIVONIA,
Mich.
– The Madonna men’s
team scored four goals on the day – three for their own side while giving up an
own goal and came away with a 3-1 win over visiting Siena Heights on Saturday at
Greenmead Field. Darrel Quinn led the way for MU with a goal and an assist.
The
Crusaders (6-2-2; 4-1-1 WHAC) dodged a bullet early in the game as the Saints’
Joel Parrish had two point blank shots with in a span of five seconds, with the
first one being cleared off the line by a MU defender but was sent right back to
Parrish who sent another shot towards the net but hit the cross bar and saw his
shot bounce over the bar out of bounds.
MU got on
the board in the 17th minute as Emilio Giorgi beat six defenders in
the box and fired a shot past Andy Klenner to give Madonna a 1-0 lead.
The match
became 1-1 just over a minute later as a Saint shot was chipped by a Crusader
defender past Kris Lyons for an own goal and a 1-1 contest.
Quinn
provided the excitement in the 35th minute as SHU was whistled for a
foul inside the penalty area and MU was awarded a penalty kick. Quinn stepped up
to the spot and fired his shot shoulder high to the left side of the net after
Klenner dove right to give the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish.
Madonna
iced the match away in the 83rd minute as newcomer Makesi Lewis took
a pass from Quinn just outside the 18-yard box and rolled a shot to the far post
that eluded the reach of Klenner for a 3-1 Madonna final.
Lyons was
tested, making four stops and was helped out by a save from his defense. Quinn
led the way for the offense, posting the game winning goal and an assist.
The
Crusaders have a week until they are back in action, this time traveling to
Davenport for a 12:00 pm kickoff with the Panthers. MU will be looking for a
little revenge as DU came to Livonia and left with a 2-1 win on Sept. 4.
