Three Madonna
players scored in double digits but the Crusaders came up short as
Marygrove escaped with an 82-74 win at the Activities Center on
Wednesday night.
Senior Adam Kerfoot (Gaylord,
Mich./St. Mary HS) led MU with 18 points and eight assists and
junior D.J. Bridges (Canton,
Mich./Canton HS) posted 12 points and a team high nine rebounds.
Senior forward Mike Rashad
(Inkster, Mich./Wayne Memorial HS) tallied 10 points and
collected seven rebounds for Madonna in a losing effort.
Sophomore guard Drew Coker
(Whitmore Lake, Mich./Whitmore Lake HS) had a career night with
seven points on 3-of-7 shooting (1-of-5 3FG, 2-2 FT).
Marygrove guard Anthony Acho led all scorers with 25 points on the
evening.
The Crusaders trailed by only four at the half after freshman
Jordan Hoke (Grand Rapids,
Mich./Byron Center HS) buried a 25-footer as time expired in the
first period of play.
The lead would change hands four times in the second half, but the
Mustangs pulled away after Curtis Leavy connected on a three-point
play to give Marygrove the lead for good.
The Mustangs would lead by as much as 12 points in the game and won
the contest by an eight-point advantage (82-74). Madonna was
unable to secure a first half lead and could only muster a one-point
lead on four separate occasions in the second half.
The Crusaders recorded a .366 (26-for-71) shooting percentage from
the field in the game, but shot only .200 (6-for-30) from beyond the
arc, including a 1-for-11 (.091) performance from three-point land
in the first half.
Marygrove shot .424 (25-of-59) from the floor and posted a .958
shooting percentage from the charity stripe, missing only one free
throw all game (23-of-24).
