After jumping out to a 23-point halftime lead (48-25), the Madonna
men's basketball team staved off a hard charging Indiana Tech team
in the second half for a 91-82 win Saturday afternoon at the
Activities Center.
Madonna (6-12; 2-0 WHAC) improved to 2-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier
Athletic Conference for the first time in school history.
Senior forward
Derrick Mudri
(Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS) moved into eighth place
on the MU all-time scoring list after he buried a three-point bucket
with 1:58 remaining in the first half to pass
Narvin Russaw (908 points). Mudri finished the
contest with 12 points, including 10 in the first half.
Indiana Tech (10-7; 0-2 WHAC) outscored the Crusaders 57-43 in the
second half and at one time trimmed the MU lead to just seven points
after being down by as much as 27 in the game.
The Warriors went on a 19-9 run over a five minute period late in
the second half which cut Madonna's lead to 11 points with 3:28 left
in the game. The Crusaders received back-to-back lay ups from
DJ Bridges
(Canton, Mich./Canton HS) which helped Madonna push the lead
back to 14 points. Indiana Tech then rattled off an 11-6 run
which pulled the Warriors to their closest deficit (seven points) of
the second half before Madonna sealed the contest on a pair of free
throws by
Adam Kerfoot
(Gaylord, Mich./St. Mary HS).
The Crusaders received a pair of game highs from Bridges who scored
26 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kerfoot chipped in 13
points and junior guard
Charlie Henry
(Canton, Mich./Agape Christian Academy) added 12 points and a
game high six assists for the Crusaders.
Overall, MU shot a season high 58-percent (35-of-60) from the field,
including a scorching 65-percent (20-of-31) from the floor in the
first half alone. The Crusaders also dished out 21 assists on
the season high 35 made field goals.
Madonna also held the WHAC's leading scorer, Jonathan Battle, to
just 16 points in the contest. Battle recorded 10 of his 16
points from the charity stripe.
Madonna will return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 10, as the
Crusaders travel to Grand Rapids to match up with Aquinas (10-8; 2-0
WHAC), who posted back-to-back league wins against Cornerstone and
Michigan-Dearborn.
