D.J. Bridges scored a
game high 24 points in Madonna's win over Davenport on Wednesday
night. |
LIVONIA, Mich.
- -On the strength of 24
points from senior D.J. Bridges (Canton, Mich.) and 19
more from classmate Jon Battle (Cleveland, Ohio),
the Madonna men's basketball team came back to wrap up the
regular season with a 60-57 win over visiting Davenport on Wednesday
night inside the Activities Center. The win gives MU an 18-12
overall record and the Crusaders wrap up WHAC play at 10-4.Davenport
fell to 10-19 overall, 3-10 in loop action.
It seemed that neither
team wanted to take a large lead in the first half as the game saw nine ties in
the opening 20 minute of action. Davenport held a three point lead on a trio of
occasions while the Crusaders held a three point cushion just twice. DU's Tyler
Ybema cut the Madonna lead to just a single point with three seconds left in the
half, sending the Crusaders to the break up just 31-30.
The two teams were almost
identical on the box score after the first half, as DU shot 40 percent, just one
point ahead of MU which shot at a 39 percent clip.
The second stanza opened
with the Crusaders taking a four point lead on a Battle bucket and free throw to
give the home side a 36-32 edge. But just as fast as MU was up four, it found
itself tied for the 10th time in the game, this time at 36-36 before Davenport
went on a 14-8 run to lead by six at 50-44 with 9:25 left.
The two sides traded
baskets until the Crusaders tied the game for the 11th time on another Battle
score and the ensuing free throw gave the Crusaders a lead they would not
relinquish at 55-54.
DU made it interesting as
after a Mike Rashad (Inkster, Mich.) putback gave the Crusaders a
four point lead, the Panthers' Nathan Cox scored on a driving layup and was
fouled. Cox sank the charity toss to cut the Madonna lead to one at 58-57 but
two Charlie Henry (Canton, Mich.) free throws iced the game away
with just .2 showing on the clock and send the home crowd happy with a 60-57 MU
win.
Battle and Bridges were
the only Crusaders to crack double figures, while Rashad paced the home side
with 10 rebounds. Cox led DU with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Prior to the game the
Madonna Athletic Department paused to honor the 2008 senior class of Bridges,
Battle, Keith Hearns (Livonia, Mich.), Henry and Karvens
Paillere (Romulus, Mich.) in their regular season home finale.
Madonna is now off until
one week from tonight when it will host a WHAC Tournament opening round game at
7:30pm. Final playoff pairings will be announce by the WHAC office on Sunday.
