MU Men Come Back To Down Concordia
Jon Battle scored a career best 30 points in MU's win over Concordia on Saturday.

LIVONIA, Mich. - - A career best 30 points and 14 rebounds from Jon Battle (Cleveland, Ohio) helped the Madonna (17-12; 9-4 WHAC) men’s basketball team score a 76-70 come-from-behind win over visiting Concordia (10-18; 6-6 WHAC) on Saturday inside the Activities Center. The win - Madonna’s 17th overall and ninth in WHAC play – establishes a new school record for conference wins for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders had a pair of eight point leads in the opening half, the second coming via a triple from D.J. Bridges (Canton, Mich.) with 12:04 left in the half. The Cards came back to tie the game at 21-21 with 7:48 left on a Matt Jastrzembowski bucket. Concordia and Madonna traded the lead three times over the next five minutes until MU took the lead back for good in the half on a Battle lay-up with 1:55 showing on the clock. The Crusaders held the lead the remainder of the half, taking a 34-32 lead into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Concordia went on a 10-2 run over the opening five minutes of the half to take a 44-38 lead with 15:11 left. The Cards then pushed their lead to its largest margin at eight (51-43) with 12:42 left and again with 9:57 left (56-48).

The Crusaders tied the game using a 13-6 run to make it 62-62 with 4:29 left on a Cedric Sims (Canton, Mich.) lay-up to cap the run. The Cards took the lead back at 65-62 but a Battle free throw and another Sims score created the sixth tie of the game at 65-65.

Charlie Henry (Canton, Mich.) canned a triple that was started with a steal by Bridges and gave the home side a 68-65 lead it would not relinquish. Battle scored and was fouled and his charity toss pushed the MU lead to six at 71-65. The senior from Cleveland then converted five of the six remaining free throws he attempted to ice the game way for Madonna.

The Crusaders – who locked up the first winning season in school history with their win on Wednesday night over Siena Heights – got double-digit scoring efforts from Sims (16) and Bridges (12) to go along with the career high from Battle. Henry and Battle also had four assists each to lead the Crusaders. Anthony Bates led the Cards with 30 of his own to match Battle.

Madonna wraps up the regular season on Wednesday night as the second half of a women’s and men’s basketball double header against Davenport. It will also be senior night as the MU program pauses to honor its senior class. The women get the night started at 5:30pm, with the men’s tip slated for 7:30pm.
