Madonna University Athletics Director Bryan Rizzo announced today
(July 13) that Steve Mato has been named the new head men’s golf coach at
Madonna University. Mato begins his duties, effective immediately.
Mato comes to Madonna from Franklin High School (Livonia, Michigan) where he has
served as men’s varsity coach for the past 14 seasons. In his time at Franklin,
Mato guided has produced several scholarship and mini-tour players and was named
the Coach of the Year last season.
"We are pleased to have coach Mato as a member of the Madonna staff,” said
Rizzo. “He has a wealth of coaching experience and will be the right man to take
our program to the next phase of development. I feel very fortunate to get
someone with his credentials. He is going to be a great addition.”
Mato, who holds a masters degree in Education and is a Special Education teacher
in the Livonia Public Schools system has also spent the past 28 years as the
Director of Golf at Fellows Creek Golf Club in Canton.
Mato takes over the men’s golf program from Bill Durham who resigned the
position in May. He inherits a mix of returning letterwinners and signess that
will again compete for control of the WHAC standings. The men’s program,
although relatively new, boast a pair of third place WHAC finishes and the WHAC
individual champion two season ago.
Mato, and his wife Deborah have two children; Melissa and Michael and reside in
Canton.
