Joel Cheesman has
signed to
play golf at MU starting this Fall.. |
LIVONIA, Mich.
- - Head men’s
golf coach Steve Mato announced the first student-athlete in his 2008
recruiting class with the signing of Joel Cheesman to a letter of intent.
Cheesman, the younger brother of Crusader senior Aaron Cheesman, will
continue his academic and athletic careers at MU starting this fall and plans to
major in history.
“Joel
comes from a good golf family and will be a great addition to our roster,” said
Mato following the signing. “He can compete for a spot in our line up early on
and will contribute quickly.”
Cheesman
(Canton, Mich.) is in his fourth year on the varsity squad at Salem High
School and has also earned letters in hockey for the Rocks. As a freshman he was
named all-division in the Western Lakes Activities Association. As a sophomore,
Cheesman averaged 76 shots a round while qualifying for the state tournament
after being named all-conference. In his junior season, Cheesman was hampered by
injury but still managed a 41.5 stroke average for nine holes. He picked up an
all-division selection in hockey this winter and is currently in the midst of
his senior season for the Rocks on the links.
MU loses
just two letter winners from this year’s squad after finishing third in the WHAC
standings last fall.
