Patrick Daugherty, an
assistant boys track and cross-country coach at Livonia Churchill high school
for the past three years has been hired as the first coach in Madonna University
cross-country history, Athletics Director Bryan Rizzo announced today.

program, their 10th and 11th sport in all, will begin running in the fall of
2005.During his tenure on the Churchill staff, the team set school
records in the 800m and 3200m relay. Daugherty also coached the 3200m relay team
to three regional championships and state qualification from 2001-03 and three
individual 800m state qualifiers and one 1600m qualifier.
In addition to his Churchill experience, Daugherty has also served as the
head boy’s and girl’s cross-country coach at Frost Middle School in Livonia and
is a P.E./Health teacher at Churchill high.
The 32-year-old Daugherty (4-7-72) is a native of Norfolk, VA but grew up in
southeastern Michigan and attended both Central and Eastern Michigan
Universities. After completing his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan in
1994, Daugherty earned his teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan in 1999
and will complete his masters degree in Educational Leadership this coming
December.
Rizzo cited Daugherty’s ties to the area as just one of the strong points in
MU’s newest addition.
"We are very excited to have a coach who is familiar with the area as well as
a highly energetic person," stated Rizzo. "Building two teams from the ground up
will be a challenge, but we are confident Patrick is ready to create a quality,
competitive program as soon as possible."
An avid runner, Daugherty has run numerous long distance races over the past
12 years including starting a finishing seven
different marathons including the Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta and Boston marathon.
