The Madonna University baseball team opened conference play with a double header
split at Indiana Tech, winning game one 5-1, and falling 2-1 in extra innings in
the nightcap.
In the
process, senior pitcher
Will Kennedy
(Westland, Mich.) became the new all-time strikeout leader in Crusader history
fanning seven Indiana Tech Warriors in the game one win. Kennedy (2-1)
eclipsed the career mark of 197 set from 2004-06 by Derek Dufrane.
Kennedy's
seven strikeouts, giving him 199 for his career, came over six-and-one-third
innings of four hit baseball, paving the way for John McCracken's fourth
save of the season.
Offensively, senior centerfielder Zack McMillian and freshman catcher
Drew Adamiec provided the sparks. McMillin went 2-for-4 with a run
scored and three RBIs while Adamiec added a 2-for-3 day with a run scored and
driven in.
Game two proved
to be a classic pitching duel as the teams took a 1-1 tie into extra frames.
Madonna scored their run in the fourth when senior Pat Kenny singled and
stole second to begin the inning and later scored on a error.
The Warriors
answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff
home run by Dan Cody off of Madonna starter Sean Maher who went the first
six-and-one-third, allowing just three hits while striking out two before giving
way to reliever Carl McDevitt.
McDevitt held the
host Warriors at bay until the bottom of the eighth when Cody again provided the
offensive punch with a game winning RBI single to salvage a split for the host
squad.
The split sends
Madonna to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in WHAC play while Indiana Tech moves to 13-11
and 1-1 in conference action.
The Crusaders are
scheduled to open the home slate Friday afternoon versus Rochester College
before returning to conference play this weekend with a home-and-home slate
versus Siena Heights University.
Kennedy will get
the call to take the hill in the weekend series, needing just one strikeout to
become the first MU pitcher to ever reach the 200 strikeout plateau.
