Four Players Earn All-Region Honors
May 12, 2008
LIVONIA, Mich. - -
Led by WHAC Player and Pitcher of the Year Kevin Zerbo and Will
Kennedy, the Madonna University baseball team placed four student-athletes
on the NAIA Region VIII all-region team as announced by the Region VIII office
following the completion of the tournament.
Joining
Zerbo and Kennedy on the awards list were senior shortstop Levi Cheshire
and senior closer John McCracken. All four were also selected to the
WHAC’s all-league first team last week prior to the conference tournament.
The
Crusaders also saw skipper Greg Haeger honored as the Region Coach of the
Year, after guiding his squad to a 37-14 mark. It is the second time
Haeger has been lauded by Region VIII.
Zerbo
(Farmington, Mich.), the WHAC’s Co-Player of the Year, led MU with a .377
average, 13 doubles and 46 runs batted in. He was second on the club with nine
home runs and struck out just 14 times in 162 at-bats.
Kennedy
(Westland, Mich.) became the first Madonna hurler to pass the 200 career
strike out mark this season and in the process became the school’s career record
holder in punch outs with 238. This season he was fourth on the team with a 2.26
ERA in 71.2 innings of work, posting a 7-3 record in 11 starts.
Cheshire
(Troy, Mich.) made his mark in his only season as a Crusader, hitting
.303 with seven doubles, a team high four triples and five home runs. Cheshire
started 48 games at short stop, teaming with Ryan Morrow (Taylor, Mich.)
to form one of the top double-play combinations in the region.
McCracken (Pinckney, Mich.) tied the single-season saves record, closing
out nine games while posting a 2-0 record to go along with a 1.59 ERA in 22.2
innings. A converted infielder, McCracken’s 10 career saves places him third in
the all-time MU record books.
Madonna
ended the 2008 season with a 37-14 record and captured its third WHAC regular
season and tournament championships in the last four seasons.
