GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference office announced on Monday that Madonna teammates Jeff Sonnenberg and Kevin Zerbo had swept the WHAC’s Pitcher and Player of the Week awards respectively. This is the first selection for Sonnenberg and the second for Zerbo this season.

Sonnenberg (Lansing, Mich.) was selected after going 2-0 in two appearances last week. The junior right hander threw 5.2 innings of relief in a 9-6 MU win over Indiana Tech. He struck out five Warriors to pick up his first win of the week and followed that performance up with a nine strikeout performance in a no-hitter against Aquinas on Saturday. Sonnenberg carried a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing two base runners on a walk and an error. For the week Sonnenberg allowed just one walk in 12.2 innings of work.

Zerbo (Farmington, Mich.) picked up the weekly honor after hitting .464 in a 10-game stretch that saw the Crusaders go 9-1 and clinch the WHAC Championship and the right to host the upcoming WHAC tournament as the number one seed. The junior first baseman went 13-for-28 with three doubles, a home run and 14 RBIs, including 10 during a four-game sweep of Indiana Tech on Monday and Tuesday. Zerbo was also outstanding at first base, recording 73 putouts while adding an assist and not committing an error.

The Crusaders return to action this Saturday with the start of a weekend series with Concordia at Ilitch Ballpark at 1pm.
