GRAND RAPIDS
, Mich.
– The Madonna baseball team
split its Saturday WHAC double
header at Aquinas. MU fell in game one 2-1 before Jeff Sonnenberg
threw a no-hitter in game two, a 4-0 Madonna win. With the split,
the Crusaders are now 27-11 overall and 14-4 in the WHAC. AQ
is now 14-21; 6-10 in loop action
GAME
1
Aquinas took the early lead on MU ace Will Kennedy (Westland, Mich.),
scoring a single run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 edge.
The Crusader bats tied the
score in the top of the third as Ryan Morrow (Taylor, Mich.) led off with a bunt
single but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Levi Cheshire (Troy,
Mich.). Shawn Little (Canton, Mich.) then singled to right, moving Cheshire to
third and bringing Kevin Zerbo (Farmington, Mich.) to the plate. The junior
first basman scored Cheshire on a sac fly to right, knotting the game at 1-1.
AQ untied the game in the
bottom of the inning, using two hits and a MU error to make it 2-1. MU's best
chance to tie the game came in the sixth as Pat Kenny (Utica, Mich.) and Mike
Cauzillo (West Bloomfield, Mich.) both singled but David Ottenwess got Dave
Herrick (Westland, Mich.) to pop out and end the threat.
Ottenwess got MU to go
down in order in the seventh, preserving the 2-1 win for the Saints.
Kennedy took the loss,
falling to 5-2 on the season. Morrow led MU with two hits, while Zerbo had the
only Crusader RBI.
GAME
2
In the night cap, the
Crusaders staked the starter Sonnenberg to a 3-0 lead before he even took the
mound for the bottom of the first inning. Morrow and Cheshire were both hit to
put runners at first and second. After Little reached on a fielder's choice that
knocked out Cheshire, Morrow was thrown out trying to steal home for the second
out of the inning. Zerbo then stroked a single to left to score Little from
second for a 1-0 MU lead.
It became 2-0
after Zerbo moved to second on a balk and Herrick doubled down the line in right
to plate Zerbo. Kenny then delivered a single to center to move Herrick up to
third and both runners stole on the next pitch, sending Herrick across the plate
for the third MU run and a 3-0 cushion.
MU made it 4-0 in
the fifth as Morrow reached on an infield single and scored on a Little single
to center for the fourth Crusader tally.
Sonnenberg had
the game on cruise control, not allowing an AQ base runner until the seventh
inning when two Saints reached, one via an error and one on a walk, but it would
make no difference as the junior righty got Drew Oosterhouse to fly out to right
to end the game and give MU the split with a no-hitter.
Sonneberg struck
out nine on the day, including six of the first nine Saints he faced to pick up
his third win of the season. Cauzillo had two hits for the victorious Crusaders
while Herrick, Little and Zerbo each had RBIs.
The two schools
will complete the season series - now tied at 2-2 - on Sunday in a 1pm first
pitch at Ilitch Ballpark.
