GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.
The Madonna baseball team split a league doubleheader at Aquinas Sunday afternoon.  The Saints (21-21, 6-10 WHAC) won the opener 9-7 but the Crusaders (24-16, 11-9 WHAC) rolled over Aquinas with a 19-4 decision in seven innings to claim game two.

In the nightcap, four Madonna players hit home runs, including senior right fielder
Tony Luttman
(Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS) who hit his sixth of the season.

With a 7-2 lead after two innings, the Crusaders put up eight more runs in the third inning, capped off by a three-run homer off the bat of
Garrett Ignasiak (Waterford, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS).

Madonna received two more runs in the fourth inning as Kyle Fedorka (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) swatted a two-run home run, giving MU a 17-2 advantage.

The Crusaders picked up their final two runs of the contest in the sixth inning as Gary Rule (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford HS) slammed a two-run round tripper.

MU starter Josh Regits (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) cruised during the contest with the large cushion.  Regits worked six innings and allowed just three hits and two runs, while striking out 10 in the win.

Luttman and Ryan Morrow (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy HS) each recorded four hits in the nightcap.  Morrow also scored five of MU's 19 runs and stole a base in the win.

Overall, the Crusaders pounded out 22 hits in game two.

In the first game of the day, the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Gary VanAllen (Dearborn, Mich./Crestwood HS) hit a two-run homer after a double by Fedorka.

Madonna increased their lead to three runs in the fourth inning after Manny Alvarado (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) tripled and scored on Matt Humenay's (Westland, Mich./Churchill HS) sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Aquinas finally got on the board with four runs off Madonna starter Eric Wendling (New Lothrop, Mich./New Lothrop HS), capped off by a homer from Chris Atkin.

After Madonna picked up the tying run in the top of the fifth inning, Wendling was chased from the contest after surrendering three more Saints runs in the fifth.

The Crusaders scored a pair of in the sixth inning as pinch hitter Dan Miller (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) delivered a two-RBI double to cut the score to one run (7-6).

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Saints added two insurance runs off MU reliever Mike Hand (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS).

The Crusaders picked up a run in the seventh as Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) hit a solo home run, but Aquinas was able to stop the Madonna threat and hold on for the 9-7 win.

Wendling was saddled with the loss for the Crusaders after working five innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Madonna will return to action Tuesday, April 24 in a single non-conference game at Ilitch Ballpark against Northwood.  First pitch of the nine-inning contest is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
