Madonna head
coach Greg Haeger earned his
300th career
win Saturday as the Crusaders baseball team split at Aquinas.
Haeger, who is in his 11th season as the head coach at Madonna, picked up the
milestone win in game one as the Crusaders (23-15, 10-8 WHAC) defeated Aquinas
6-1.
The host Saints (20-20, 5-9 WHAC) were able to come back in game two and defeat
Madonna 14-4 in seven innings to earn the split in the nightcap and putting an
end to the Crusaders six-game win streak.
Aquinas picked up their lone run in game one in the second inning after Brent
Serba singled up the middle, scoring Jon Morse. However, the rest of the
contest would be all Madonna as the Crusaders scored the next six runs of the
ballgame.
MU pushed across four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The Crusaders would add two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as
Garrett Ignasiak (Waterford, Mich./Orchard
Lake St. Mary's HS) hit a two-run homer, scoring
Gary VanAllen (Dearborn, Mich./Crestwood HS).
Mike Orehek (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn
Crestwood HS) picked up the win on the mound for Madonna, pitching six
innings and scattering six hits while allowing just the one run in the second
inning.
Madonna picked up a total of seven hits in game one, lead by VanAllen's 2-for-2
performance.
In the second game of the day, Aquinas won 14-4 in a shortened contest due to
the 10-run rule.
Manny Alvarado (Southfield,
Mich./Southfield HS) shined offensively for the Crusaders, driving in three
of the four runs.
Alvarado hit a two-run homer in the second inning and followed that up with
an RBI double in the third. Overall, he posted a 2-for-3 performance at
the plate.
Despite Alvarado's best efforts to keep MU in the lead, the Saints scored 14
unanswered runs to salvage a split on the day.
John McCracken (Pinckney,
Mich./Pinckney HS) earned his first loss of the season after working 2.1
innings of relief and allowing three runs on five hits as Aquinas grabbed the
lead with him in the game.
The Crusaders will return to play Sunday, April 22 in another doubleheader at
Aquinas. First pitch of the first game of the day is scheduled for 1:00
p.m.
