The Madonna baseball team used three home runs in the nightcap to sweep Siena
Heights in a league doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders
(22-14, 9-7 WHAC) won game one, 6-1, and then earned the sweep with a 6-3
decision in eight innings to claim game two.
Junior right hander
Will Kennedy
(Westland,
Mich./John Glenn HS) turned in a strong pitching performance in the opening
game of the day.
Kennedy, who lowered his team leading earned run average to 0.98, scattered
six hits, allowed an unearned run and struck out seven to pick up his third win
of the season.
The Crusaders pushed across a single run in both the first and third innings
before busting out for three runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead to
four runs (5-1) over the host Saints (9-27, 5-11 WHAC).
MU added an insurance run for Kennedy in the sixth inning as senior
infielder
Kyle Fedorka
(White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) singled home sophomore infielder
Ryan Morrow
(Taylor, Mich./Kennedy HS), who reached earlier in the inning with a
lead off double.
The nightcap started out as a pitching duel between the SHU starter Adam
Kiersey and MU sophomore right hander
Carl McDevitt
(Canton, Mich./Canton HS).
After five scoreless innings, Madonna finally got on the board as freshman
outfielder
Rikco Rhoades
(White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) scored in the sixth inning on a
passed ball to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
Senior outfielder
Manny Alvarado
(Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) homered to left center field in the
seventh inning to increase MU's lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Siena Heights' Tim Stoddard hit a pinch
hit two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2.
The Crusaders broke the tie in the top of the eighth inning after Fedorka
belted a two-run opposite field home run.
Just three batters later, junior catcher
Garrett Ignasiak
(Waterford, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) stepped to the plate
and swatted another two-run homer to give MU at 6-2 lead.
Senior reliever
Mike Hand
(Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) came on in the bottom
of the eighth inning and allowed a run before finishing off the Saints to
complete the sweep.
Morrow led the Crusaders offensive attack in the doubleheader with four hits
to raise his team leading batting average to .391 on the season.
Madonna will return to action Saturday, April 21 for the first day of a
four-game weekend series at Aquinas. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled
to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Kimble Stadium in Grand Rapids. Sunday's
doubleheader will also begin at 1:00 p.m.
