–
Freshman right
hander
Pedro Guerrero
(Caohuila, Mexico/C.B. Technico HS) pitched four innings of two-hit
ball in relief to record his first collegiate win as the Crusaders defeated host
Northwood 6-4 in Midland Tuesday afternoon.
Madonna (20-14, 7-7 WHAC) scored three runs in the first inning capped off by a
two-RBI single by junior catcher
Garrett Ignasiak
(Waterford, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS).
Northwood (13-17) picked up an unearned run off MU sophomore starter
Ryan Brodowsky
(Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS) in the bottom of the first, but the
Crusaders would score in the top of the second after senior outfielder
Manny Alvarado
(Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) crossed home plate on a double
steal.
The Timberwolves would pick up another unearned run in the home half of the
second on a throwing error by senior third baseman
Gary VanAllen
(Dearborn, Mich./Crestwood HS).
Sophomore first baseman
Gary Rule
(Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford HS) would score the fifth Madonna run in
the fourth inning after senior infielder
Matt Humenay
(Westland, Mich./Churchill HS) singled to center field.
Northwood would cut the lead to just one run (5-4) after plating two runs off
Brodowsky in the fourth, chasing him from the contest.
Guerrero came on in the fifth inning and surrendered two hits before settling
down and keeping the Timberwolves bats silent before giving way to senior right
hander
Mike Hand
(Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) in the ninth inning.
The Crusaders picked up an insurance run in the ninth inning as Alvarado scored
on a double down the left field line by Humenay.
After the lead off batter reached base for the host team in the ninth inning,
Hand replaced Guerrero to work the final inning and pick up his third save this
season.
Ignasiak, Rule and Humenay led the Crusaders attack at the plate, with each
player recording a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs in the win.
Madonna will return to the diamond Wednesday, April 18 in a league doubleheader
at Siena Heights, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Adrian.
