FORT WAYNE,
Ind.
– The Madonna baseball team swept league leading Indiana Tech
6-1 and 4-3 Sunday in Fort Wayne.
The Crusaders scored in the first three innings of game one and then cruised the
rest of the contest as junior southpaw
Eric Wendling
(New Lothrop,
Mich./New Lothrop HS) limited the Warriors to just five hits and one run in
a complete game effort.
Wendling (4-1), who lowered his season earned run average to 1.96, surrendered a
first inning home run to Shane Tirey before locking in and not allowing an
Indiana Tech runner to advance past second base for the remainder of the
contest. The left hander also struck out 11 batters in the win.
MU scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the second and two more
runs in the third inning to secure the win in the opener.
Sophomore
Ryan Morrow
(Taylor, Mich./Kennedy HS) and junior
Garrett Ignasiak
(Waterford, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) each recorded a pair of hits
to lead the Crusaders attack at the plate.
In the second game of the doubleheader, MU starter
Josh Regits
(Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) lasted three batters into the fifth inning
before leaving with the game tied at 2-2.
After senior
Mike Hand
(Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) finished up the fifth inning
for the Crusaders on the hill, junior
John McCracken
(Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) took over and pitched the final five innings.
Madonna pushed across a run in the seventh inning as senior
Manny Alvarado
(Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) scored while the Warriors were busy
turning a double play off a grounder by senior
Kyle Fedorka
(White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS).
Indiana Tech managed to score an equalizing run in the bottom of the ninth
inning after an error by the Crusaders defense.
In the 10th inning, the Crusaders received a lead off single by senior
Tony Luttman
(Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS), who advanced to second base on a
ground out by Ignasiak.
After a pop out by senior
Matt Humenay
(Westland, Mich./Churchill HS), McCracken stepped in and singled home
Luttman for the go-ahead run.
Following his heroics at the plate in the top of the inning, McCracken returned
to the mound to record the win after retiring the Warriors with a pair of
strikeouts and a fly out.
McCracken worked five innings, allowed just two hits and one run and struck out
five. He also recorded the game winning hit, which allowed the Crusaders
to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Warriors and move into sole possession
of second place in the current Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings.
The Crusaders will return to action Tuesday, April 18 in a non-conference
doubleheader at Northwood University at 3:00 p.m.
