Crusaders
Hand Tech First Conference Loss
Site:
Livonia, Mich. (Ilitch
Ballpark)
LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna baseball team handed league leader Indiana Tech their first league loss of the season, 3-2 in game one of a double-header split with the Warriors Saturday afternoon. In a pair of games moved to Ilitch Ballpark after a threat of rain in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Crusaders used solid starting pitching from senior Mike Orehek and a three-run fourth inning to hold off the Warriors in the opener. Gary Van Allen started the fourth with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Tony Luttman. Both runners would advance on a double-steal and later score on a two-run single by first baseman John McCracken. Pinch-runner Dan Miller later scored what would be the game winning run on a wild pitch by Tech hurler Shawn Loglisci giving MU a 3-0 lead. The Warriors answered with a run in the fifth off Orehek and one more in the seventh off reliever Mike Hand, but it was not enough as MU held on for the 3-2 victory. Orehek picked up the win, moving to 3-0 on the season, he struck out three over five-and-two-thirds and allowed just one run. In game two, Madonna again jumped on the board first with a three-run opening frame. Ryan Morrow led off the game with a strikeout but advanced to first on a throwing error by Tech catcher Eric Ogden. Morro Morrow moved all the way to third on back-to-back wild pitches by pitcher Marcus White and scored the games first run on a ground-out by Kyle Fedorka. Van Allen then reached on a error by third baseman Robert Hitchens and later scored on a double down the right field line by Luttman. MU took a 3-0 lead when Manny Alvarado singled home courtesy runner Drew Fry, staking MU starter Ryan Bardoni to a 3-0 lead. Bardoni wiggled his way in and out of trouble through three-and-two-thirds innings of work, allowing just one hit, but walking four while giving up a pair of runs before giving way to what would be five Crusader relievers. With MU
leading 3-2 in the fifth, Tech tied the game off reliever Joe Kennedy on a RBI
single by Joe Corona. But the Crusaders did not go down without a fight, cutting the lead to 6-5 on a RBI single by Luttman and RBI ground-out by Garrett Ignasiak before Tech reliever Garret Wiejak finished off MU in the ninth, preserving the split. With the split, Madonna moves to 17-14 overall and 5-7 in WHAC play while Indiana Tech goes to 25-8-1 overall and 11-1 in conference action. The two teams are back in action tomorrow when they head to Fort Wayne for the final two games of the regular season series. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
