– The Madonna baseball team earned a split with visiting
Concordia Friday at Ilitch Ballpark after junior right-hander
Carl McDevitt
(Canton,
Mich./Canton HS) notched a complete game 5-1 win over his former team in the
nightcap.
McDevitt scattered eight hits and struck out five while holding the Cardinals
(11-14, 1-5 WHAC) to just one run in the back end of the doubleheader.
The Crusaders (16-13, 4-6 WHAC) went up 1-0 in the fourth inning after senior
Gary VanAllen
(Dearborn, Mich./Crestwood HS) scored while the Cardinals were busy
turning a double play on a grounder by senior
Manny Alvarado
(Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS).
MU scored two more runs in the fifth inning as senior
Matt Humenay
(Westland, Mich./Churchill HS) scored on an error and junior
Garrett Ignasiak
(Waterford, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) brought home VanAllen
on a triple to the right center gap.
The Cardinals were able to scratch out a run off McDevitt in the sixth inning
after Zach Johnston hit an RBI single, which plated his brother, Zane.
Madonna promptly answered in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of insurance
runs as sophomore
Ryan Morrow
(Taylor, Mich./Kennedy HS) tripled home sophomore
Scott Boyer
(Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS) and junior
John McCracken
(Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) to give the home squad a 5-1 lead.
McDevitt (2-2) slammed the door in the seventh inning on his former club to pick
up his first conference victory this season.
Bobby Koon (1-3) was saddled with the loss for Concordia after giving up five
hits and five runs in a complete game effort.
In the opening game of the day, the visiting Cardinals scored four times in the
third inning off MU junior right hander
Will Kennedy
(Westland, Mich./John Glenn HS).
Madonna would pick up a run in the fourth inning after senior
Kyle Fedorka
(White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) would score on an errant throw by
Concordia's Jason Christopoulus.
Concordia would add two more runs in the fifth inning and would chase Kennedy
from the mound in favor of senior reliever
Mike Hand
(Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS).
MU would pick up one more run in the sixth inning as senior
Tony Luttman
(Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS) would plate VanAllen, who tripled
in the previous at bat.
The Cardinals would put an end to any thoughts of a comeback bid by Madonna as
reliever Kyle McIntyre retired the Crusaders in the seventh after surrendering a
walk.
Drew Linder (2-3) picked up the win for Concordia after pitching six innings and
allowing just four hits and two runs.
Kennedy (2-1) was handed his first loss of the year after tossing 4.1 innings
and surrendering six hits and six runs, all of which were unearned. He
also walked three batters and struck out three in the loss.
VanAllen led the way offensively for the Crusaders with a pair of hits in the
doubleheader.
Madonna will return to action Saturday, April 14 against Indiana Tech in a game
that was switched to Ilitch Ballpark. The doubleheader between the
Crusaders and the league leading Warriors will begin at 1:00 p.m.
