Split Pair with Aquinas at Ilitch

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna baseball team salvaged a split with visiting Aquinas Tuesday afternoon, scoring five runs in the fifth to win game two, 6-4. The Crusaders fell in the opener 4-3 in nine innings. In game one, MU wasted six-and-two-thirds innings of work from starter Eric Wendling who picked up a no-decision fanning five and allowing just one earned run. With the scored tied at two in the fifth, MU broke through to take the lead, 3-2, when Ryan Morrow doubled and scored on a Gary Van Allen sacrifice fly. Aquinas came right back in the sixth taking a 4-3 lead when Matt Soergel doubled and scored on a fielding error by MU leftfielder Manny Alvarado. The game stayed tied into the extra frames until Aquinas scored the go ahead run in the ninth on a RBI single by Soergel. Mike Hand took the loss in relief, going two-and-one-third and fanning one while allowing one unearned run. In the nightcap, MU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Kyle Fedorka singled home Morrow who tripled to lead off the inning. MU starter Josh Regits struggled his way through five innings of work, allowing four earned runs and striking out three. Regits was picked up by his teammates in the bottom of the sixth as MU scored five runs, the big blows coming via a two-run double by Tony Luttman and pinch-hit RBI single from Matt Humenay. John McCracken, who pitched the final two innings picked up the victory and did not allow a single Aquinas hit while striking out one for the win. Morrow was the offensive star for MU, going 6-for-10 in the double-header, including a 4-for-5 game-one performance.
