Crusaders Split with Siena Heights at Ilitch
LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna baseball team split a pair of key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games at Ilitch Ballpark Saturday, falling to Siena Heights 2-0 in game one and rebounding for a 6-0 win in the nightcap. The Crusader offensive woes continued in game one as MU mustered just three hits and were held scoreless for the third straight game. Ryan Morrow's bunt single broke up the no-hit bid by SHU starter Jake Cross in the fourth, but Cross would prove good enough, fanning four Crusaders on the way to his first win of the season. MU starter Ryan Bardoni was the hard-luck loser throwing a complete game while scattering six hits and striking out three. In the nightcap, the MU bats finally came alive scoring twice in the opening frame and never looking back. A RBI sacrifice fly by Tony Luttman in the first snapped a 21-inning scoreless streak for Madonna. Designated hitter Zach Flavin would deliver a RBI single as well as MU staked starter Will Kennedy to the early 2-0 lead. It would be all Kennedy would need as he masterfully worked his way through the SHU lineup, surrendering just five hits and no runs on the day while fanning seven Saints for his second win of the season. MU scored in five separate innings including a stretch of three straight on their way to their first WHAC win of the season. Flavin was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Rikco Rhoades added a pair of hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Catcher Ryan Powell added a pair of RBI’s. With the split, Madonna moves to 12-10, 1-3 in league play. Siena Heights goes to 5-19, 1-3 in conference action. The two teams will hook up for two more games tomorrow in Adrian, Michigan. The double-header begins at 1:00 pm.
