Crusaders Fall Twice to
William Penn
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pensacola, Fla. – The Madonna baseball team dropped a pair of games to William Penn University (Iowa), 8-7 and 8-3 Monday afternoon in Bay Minett, Alabama, part of the RussMatt Collegiate Challenge in Pensacola, Florida. Madonna jumped out on top early in game one, scoring a run in the first on Tony Luttman’s RBI single to right. The Crusaders added three in the third, two coming on a behemoth two-run homer by Luttman, giving MU a 4-1 lead. Starting pitcher Josh Regits, pitched his way in and out of trouble all day long but saw the Statesmen score twice in the bottom of the third, cutting the lead to one, 4-3. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth when William Penn broke through for five runs, all unearned off Regits. After getting the leadoff man to strike out looking Regits fell victim to a fielding error by second baseman Ryan Morrow. After a single and a fly out, Regits gave up a three-run home run to Zack Miller, the first of back-to-back-to-back shots by the William Penn offense, taking an 8-4 lead. Regits was lifted in favor of John McCracken, seeing his first action on the mound as a Crusader. McCracken gave up back to back singles before getting a groundout to end the inning. Madonna did not go down without a fight, however, scoring three times in the top of the seventh on a RBI double by Morrow and a two-run homer by Kyle Fedorka, cutting the lead to 8-7 before Luttman fanned for the final out of the game. Regits took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. The senior transfer allowed eight runs, only two earned over five-and-two-thirds innings of work and struck out a career high seven. In game two, Madonna fell behind early and never recovered. Starting pitcher Carl McDevitt gave up seven runs, all of them earned in four innings of work as the Statesmen jumped out to a 7-1 leading through three and one-half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, MU struck for two runs as Mike Cauzillo singled up the middle to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a single by Matt Humenay. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Cauzillo scored on a RBI single by Morrow. Humenay would later score on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 7-3. Ryan Brodowsky came on to pitch the final three innings, allowing just one unearned run and fanning two. The losses drop Madonna’s season record to 2-3 while William Penn improves to 3-1. The
Crusaders are back in action tomorrow when the face Hannibal LaGrange in a pair
of games beginning at 11:00 am (ET) in Pensacola.
