BOX SCORE

PENSACOLA, Fla. - - The Madonna University baseball team scored six times in the bottom of the third inning, including a two-run homerun by Tony Luttman (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) to defeat Urbana University (Ohio), 8-2 in their season opener Saturday night at the RussMatt Challenge in Pensacola, Florida.

Erick Wendling (New Lothrop, Mich./New Lothrop) hurled a complete game, striking out six to pick up his first win of the season for the Crusaders.

Madonna (1-0) stranded runners in each of the first two innings before breaking through with a six-spot in the third.

Centerfielder
Dan Miller (Walled Lake, Mich./Central) started the inning when he reached on an error and advanced to second failed pickoff attempt. Miller later stole third and scored on a RBI sigle to left by Gary VanAllen (Deaborn, Mich./Crestwood), giving MU a 1-0 lead.

The next Crusader hitter, junior catcher
Garrett Ignasiak (Waterford, Mich./Mott) doubled down the right field line, scoring VanAllen, staking MU to a 2-0 advantage.

The hit parade continued as Luttman rocketed his first home run of the season over the right field fence for a 4-0 lead.

Senior
Matt Humenay (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) singled home the fifth run of the inning and later scored the sixth on a walk to Kyle Fedorka (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) as MU took a 6-0 lead into the fourth.

It was all Wendling would need as he pitched his way out of trouble in the fifth before surrendering the first Urbana run of the game in the sixth. Wendling finished with six strikeouts in seven innings, scattering five hits and walking two.

The Crusaders added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, courtesy of RBI singles by Fedorka and
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi).

With the win, Madonna goes to 1-0 to start the season, while Urbana falls to 1-2.

The Crusaders are back in action Sunday in a split double-header. MU will square off with Purdue-North Central (Ind.) at 1:30 (ET) and Urbana at 4:00 (ET).

Will Kennedy (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) and Ryan Bardoni (Warren, Mich./Woods Tower) will take to the hill as starters in each game tomorrow.
